ตำนานเจ้าแม่กวนอิม

ถ้าพูดถึงงานเทศกาลกินเจในประเทศไทย ซึ่งในปีนี้จัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 28 กันยายน - 7 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2562 มีการจัดงานที่ยิ่งใหญ่ในหลายๆจังหวัด ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ประเพณีถือศีลกินผัก จังหวัดภูเก็ต, ประเพณีกินเจ ศาลเจ้าพ่อ-เจ้าแม่หน้าผา เมืองปากน้ำโพ นครสวรรค์ แต่ที่ใครๆก็นึกถึง คงหนีไม่พ้นงานเทศกาลกินเจ เยาวราช ที่นอกจากจะมีร้านอาหารเจ ให้เลือกรับ ประทานกันอย่างมากมายแล้ว ก็ยังมีขบวนแห่เทพเจ้า สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ต่างๆเพื่อความเป็นสิริมงคลอีกด้วย โดยหนึ่งในเทพเจ้าที่เป็นที่รู้จักในเทศกาลนี้ ก็คือ "เจ้าแม่กวนอิม"

The Vegan Festival in Thailand, which takes place from 28 September - 7 October 2019 this year, is widely celebrated in many provinces of the country—each with its own tradition such as the vegan festival in Phuket and the Gin Je festival of Chao Poh Chao Mae Napha Shrine in Paknampho Nakhonsawan. One of the best known locations for the Vegan festival is in Yaowarat or Bangkok’s Chinatown where there’re a great number of vegan (Je) restaurants available for passers-by to choose as well as auspicious religious parades of those who worship Chinese heavenly gods and goddesses—one of which is the Bodhisattva Guanyin also known in Thai as “Chao Mae Guan Im”.

ชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีนรู้จักและนับถือเจ้าแม่กวนอิม มากที่สุดองค์หนึ่งในบรรดาสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของจีน เนื่องจากมีจิตเมตตาสูง ไม่สนใจลาภ ยศ สรรเสริญใดๆ ตามตำนานนั้น เจ้าแม่กวนอิม หรือ พระโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม ประสูติเมื่อวันที่ 19 เดือนยี่ ของจีน เป็นราชธิดาองค์ที่ 3 ของกษัตริย์เมี่ยวจวง นามว่า เมี่ยวซ่าน

Thai people of Chinese descendants know her very well and regard her as one of the most revered goddesses in the Chinese deity universe. She’s seen as the Goddess of Mercy who doesn’t care about wealth, titles or praises. According to the legend, Chao Mae Guan Im or the Bodhisattva Guanyin was born on the 19th day of the second month in the Chinese calendar. Known as Miao Shan, she was the third daughter of King Miao Chuang.

องค์หญิงเมี่ยวซ่าน เป็นดั่งเทพธิดาจุติมายังโลกมนุษย์เพื่อปลดเปลื้องทุกข์ภัยแก่มวลมนุษย์ แตกต่างจากพระบิดาโดยสิ้นเชิง ทรงเสวยอาหารเจตั้งแต่อยู่ในครรภ์ พอโตขึ้นมาก็เป็นผู้ที่มีรูปโฉมงดงาม แต่ที่งามกว่าคือมีจิตใจดี เมตตาแก่ทุกคน เมื่อถึงวัยที่ต้องมีคู่ครอง ทรงทูลพระบิดาว่าจะขอออกบวชเป็นภิกษุณี จนกว่าจะบรรลุเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ ซึ่งฮ่องเต้ไม่พอพระทัยมาก แต่ก็ปล่อยให้บวช เพราะคิดว่าคงทนความลำบากไม่ได้ ระหว่างที่องค์หญิงเมี่ยวซ่าน ออกบำเพ็ญธรรม ฮ่องเต้ก็กลั่นแกล้งต่างๆนานา แต่ก็สู้ผลแห่งความดีที่พระธิดาทำไว้ไม่ได้ สุดท้ายจึงเรียกพระธิดากลับและสั่งประหาร มีเทพพยัคฆ์มาช่วยพาหนีออกมาได้ เทพพยัคฆ์นั้นก็กลายร่างเป็นบุรุษรูปงามและทดสอบความแน่วแน่ขององค์หญิงโดยการขอแต่งงาน ซึ่งองค์หญิงเมี่ยวซ่านปฎิเสธและมุ่งมั่นบำเพ็ญธรรมต่อไป

Princess Miao Shan was like a reincarnation of a celestial being on earth to rid people of their sufferings which was on the contrary to her cruel father. Miao Shan ate vegan food since she was a fetus and she grew up to be a very beautiful woman. What is more precious than her look is her heart. She was always kind and merciful with everyone. Once she reached the age for a suitable betrothal, she told her father that she would enter the monkhood as a Buddhist priestess. This infuriated the king but he decided to let her ordain as a priestess anyway as he believed Miao Shan wouldn’t be able to withstand such a tough lifestyle of the priestesses. The king continued to throw many obstacles in her life while the Princess Miao Shan was finding her way to enlightenment, but with all her good deeds she’d committed she always overcame those obstacles. With no other option, the cruel king decided to execute his own daughter but the God of Tiger came to help her run away. The God of Tiger wanted to test the decisiveness of the princess by transforming himself into a flawless handsome man and proposed her to marry him. Miao Shan refused his proposal and continued doing the good deeds and studying Dharma.

จากนั้น 9 ปี องค์หญิงเมี่ยวซ่านบำเพ็ญธรรมจนสำเร็จเป็นพระโพธิสัตว์ และได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็นใหญ่ในหมู่พระสงฆ์ มีพระนามตามภาษาจีนว่า “กวนอิมผ่อสัก” แปลว่าพระโพธิสัตว์เงี่ยหูฟังเสียงไกล ขณะที่ฮ่องเต้เมี่ยวจวงกำลังประชวรหนัก แถมยังมีหนอนบ่อนไส้มากมาย จึงเสด็จไปช่วยพระบิดา ซึ่งไม่ยอมให้แพทย์คนไหนมารักษา เจ้าแม่กวนอิมจึงปลอมเป็นพระสงฆ์ และยอมใช้แขนและดวงตาตนเองมาทำยารักษา ความดีครั้งนี้ทำลายกำแพงความร้ายกาจของฮ่องเต้ได้หมด และได้คิดว่าเจ้าแม่กวนอิมนั้นดี ถึงขนาดยอมสละอวัยวะช่วยผู้อื่น โดยไม่สนอดีตที่ถูกกลั่นแกล้ง ฮ่องเต้และพระราชวงศ์จึงสละราชสมบัติออกบำเพ็ญธรรมในบั้นปลายชีวิต ส่วนเจ้าแม่กวนอิมนั้นได้ดวงตาและแขนกลับคืนดังเดิม

After 9 long years, Miao Shan succeeded her Dharma studies and became the Bodhisattva and she was praised as the prominent Buddhist monk with the alias “Guan Im Pho Sak” meaning the Bodhisattva who can hear the sound from afar. As King Miao Chuang became gravely ill and had many traitors within his royal court, Miao Shan went to help her father who refused to receive treatments from any physicians. Chao Mae Guan Im (Miao Shan) disguised herself as a monk and sacrificed her own arms and eyes to use as remedies. Her pure heart and kindness finally won the king’s heart and rid him of all the cruelty that he had possessed. He then realized that his daughter had the purest heart of all for that she could sacrifice her own body for the others and didn’t care about the bad things he had done to her. This made the king and members of the royal family decide to abdicate the throne and enter the monkhood at the end of their lives. And Chao Mae Guan Im finally got her eyes and arms back.

Paintings or statues of the Bodhisattva Guanyin found in households to which people worship are usually portrayed as a lady with an elegant face and a feminine physique. In her left hand is a jar containing pure water which could slay demons and the right hand holds a willow branch used for splashing the pure water. Her crown usually depicts the image of Amitabha—the symbol of the Buddha.

สำหรับผู้ที่เคารพนับถือเจ้าแม่กวนอิม มักจะงดเว้นการรับประทานเนื้อสัตว์ใหญ่ ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับเทศการกินเจที่ที่นอกจากจะงดรับประทานเนื้อสัตว์ ไข่ นม ผักที่มีกลิ่นฉุน 5 ชนิดแล้ว ผู้ที่รับประทานเจ ไม่ควรกินอาหารรสจัด ควรจะกินอาหารที่คนกินเจด้วยกันปรุง จะถือว่าเป็นเจบริสุทธิ์จริงๆ นอกจากนี้จานชามที่ใช้จะต้องไม่ปนกับจานชามทั่วไป แต่งกายด้วยชุดขาว พูดจาไพเราะ ไม่พูดสิ่งไม่ดี ไม่พูดเท็จ ไม่พูดยุแหย่ ไม่เพ้อเจ้อ หรือที่เรียกว่า ปากเจ รวมทั้งไม่ดื่มสุราหรือของมึนเมา ซึ่งถ้าปฎิบัติได้ถือว่าสะอาดทั้งหมด

People who worship Chao Mae Guan Im (Guanyin) tend to avoid the consumption of large animals which is in accordance with the Vegan festival whose principle is to refrain from the consumption of meat, eggs, dairy products, and the 5 pungent vegetables. People who follow the vegan diet should abstain from strong flavored food. And the purest kind of vegan food must be made by the cooks who also eat vegan food. Additionally, plates and bowls used for this festival must not be the same as the ones you use for eating regular food. Je followers like to dress in white, speak politely and only of good things without lying or accusing others. This is called the “Je Mouth” or the Je-speaking. They also avoid consumption of alcoholic drinks during this period. Once they follow all of the preceding rules, they’ll be pure both mentally and physically.
