Makha Bucha Day, the Buddhist Holy Day falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month. The day is held to commemorate the first time that the Lord Buddha gave “The Ovadhapatimokha,” the principles of Buddhism to 1,250 ordained monks who gathered spontaneously. The 3 core principles are to be good and do good, to refrain from all the wickedness, and to purify the mind. To prepare for the approaching Makha Bucha Day, we will share with you about the tradition of robe offering to the monks. Let’s start with the meaning of the robes and how the practice can be beneficial to your lives.

ผ้าไตรจีวรหรือเรียกสั้นๆ ว่าผ้าไตรคือผ้าที่พระสงฆ์เอาไว้ใช้นุ่งห่มแทนเสื้อผ้านั่นเองค่ะ และที่ทุกคนเรียกกันว่าผ้าไตรก็เพราะว่าเครื่องนุ่งห่มของพระสงฆ์นั้นประกอบไปด้วยผ้า 3 ชิ้น ได้แก่ จีวร สบง และสังฆาฏิโดยเครื่องนุ่งห่มแต่ละชิ้นนั้นมีลักษณะดังนี้

The triple robes or the robes in short are pieces of cloth that the Buddhist monks wear as costumes. People call these clothes “triple robes” because the robes consist of 3 pieces of clothes called Chiwon, Sabong, and Sangkhati. Each robe is worn in different ways, and can be explained more in detail as follows.

ผ้าจีวร

Chiwon

เรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งว่าอุตราสงค์ เป็นผ้าชั้นนอกที่พระสงฆ์ ใช้เพื่อคลุมร่างกายเพื่อออกไปประกอบกิจของสงฆ์ภายนอกสถานที่

Chiwon is also known as Uttarasanga. This cloth is the outer cloth worn by the Buddhist monks when performing their duties outside the monastery.

สบง

Sabong

มีอีกชื่อหนึ่งว่าอันตรวาสก เป็นผ้าสำหรับนุ่งห่มในส่วนล่างแทนกางเกง มีลักษณะเป็นผ้าสี่เหลี่ยมผืนขนาดใหญ่ และมีความหนาเพื่อปกปิดร่างกายและให้ความอบอุ่นในผืนเดียว

Also known as Antaravasaka, Sabong is worn by the monks instead of pants. The robe is usually in a large rectangular shape. The fabric must be thick enough to cover the lower part of the body and to keep warm.

สังฆาฎิ

Sangkhati

เป็นผ้าที่นำมาคลุมตัวพระสงฆ์ในช่วงฤดูหนาว แต่สำหรับในฤดูอื่นๆ สังฆาฎิมักจะถูกพับเป็นสี่เหลี่ยมผืนผ้าขนาดยาว แล้วพาดไว้ที่บ่าของพระสงฆ์ นอกจากนั้นยังใช้ในกิจของพระสงฆ์ประกอบตามความเหมาะสมอีกด้วย

Sanghati is usually wrapped to cover the body during winter time. In other seasons, the cloth is traditionally folded into a piece of long rectangular shape to cover the monks’ shoulders. Moreover, Sanghati is used while the monks perform their duties where appropriate.

The Buddhists should offer the triple robes to the monks as these clothes are considered one of the four requisites for the Buddhist monks. The robes are traditional monastic costume or specific dress code for the Buddhist monks. According to the rules for the monks, they should get rid of passion caused by beautiful or attractive clothes that they prefer.

The Buddhists believe that offering the triple robes to the monks would be beneficial to their lives. Those who offer the robes will be blessed with happiness, wealth and success. Furthermore, it’s also believed that the givers will be blessed with adequate amount of four requisites. It would bring the givers good things just the same way as offering food, essentials, or other offerings dedicated to the monks.
