เปิดตำนานตะเกียงฟักทอง ต้อนรับวันฮาโลวีน

วนกลับมาอีกครั้งกับหนึ่งในเทศกาลแห่งความสนุกสนานช่วงปลายปี ซึ่งมีที่มาจากการเฉลิมฉลองก่อนวันสมโภชนักบุญชาวคริสต์ทั้งหลายในโลกตะวันตก โดยจะจัดขึ้นในทุกวันที่ 31 ตุลาคม ของทุกปี หรือที่ทุกคนรู้จักกันดีในชื่อวัน “ฮาโลวีน” นั่นเองค่ะ ในสถานการณ์ที่เป็นปกติวันฮาโลวีนทั่วทั้งโลก ไม่เว้นแม้แต่กระทั่งบ้านเราก็จะมีการจัดกิจกรรมต่างๆ ให้คนทุกเพศทุกวัยได้ร่วมสนุกสนานกันทั้งวัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการแต่งตัวแฟนซี หรือร่วมทำกิจกรรม Trick or Treat ซึ่งเป็นประเพณีประจำเทศกาลวันปล่อยผีสำหรับเด็กน้อยทั้งหลายค่ะ

Another joyful festival has come around at the end of the year once again. This festive celebration held on 31st of October every year has developed from All Hallows Eves in Western culture, and everyone recognizes this day as “Halloween Day”. ตำนาน “แจ๊ค โอ แลนเทิร์น” มีต้นกำเนิดเรื่องเล่ามาจากประเทศไอร์แลนด์ ซึ่งเป็นนิทานพื้นบ้านจากชาวไอริช ที่บอกเล่าถึงผู้ชายชาวไอริชคนหนึ่งนามว่า “แจ๊ค” มีลักษณะนิสัยที่ฉ้อฉล เต็มไปด้วยกลโกง และตระหนี่ถี่เหนียวมาก จนได้รับสมญานามว่า “แจ๊ค จอมงก” วันหนึ่งเขาได้เชิญชวนเหล่าปีศาจมากินดื่มร่วมกันกับเขา ด้วยความขี้งกของแจ๊ค จึงไม่ต้องการใช้จ่ายค่ากินดื่มเหล่านี้ เลยออกอุบายให้เหล่าปีศาจที่มาร่วมโต๊ะด้วย แปลงร่างเป็นเงินเพื่อนำไปชำระค่ากินเลี้ยงแทน แต่แล้วแจ๊คก็คิดไม่ซื่อกับเหล่าปีศาจ แจ๊คได้นำเงินที่ได้มา ทำการเก็บไว้กับตัวเองทั้งหมด แล้วสะกดวิญญาณปีศาจไม่ให้กลับคืนร่างเดิมด้วยสัญลักษณ์ไม้กางเขนค่ะ

The legend of Jack O’Lantern originated in Ireland. It’s an Irish folklore that tells a story of an Irish man named “Jack”. He was a wicked man and full of trickery. He was so stingy that the locals called him “Stingy Jack”. One day, he invited the devils to eat and drink with him. Because he was a miserly guy, of course he wouldn’t wish to pay the bill. He asked the devils to turn themselves into coins so that he could pay for the food and drinks. He then trapped the devils by keeping all the coins with him and used a cross to stop them from turning back to their original forms.

พอเวลาผ่านไป แจ๊คได้ปลดปล่อยวิญญาณปีศาจให้คืนร่างดังเดิม แต่มีเงื่อนไขว่าปีศาจจะต้องไม่กลับมาแก้แค้นเขาภายในระยะเวลา 1 ปี แต่ในปีถัดมาแจ๊คก็ได้พยายามกลั่นแกล้งปีศาจอีกครั้ง โดยการหลอกให้ปีศาจปีนต้นไม้ขึ้นไปเก็บผลไม้ แล้วแจ๊คได้สะกดวิญญาณปีศาจด้วยไม้กางเขนเช่นเคย เพื่อไม่ให้ปีศาจลงจากต้นไม้ได้ แต่ถ้าปีศาจอยากลงจากต้นไม้จะต้องสัญญากับแจ๊คว่าตัวเองจะไม่กลับมาแก้แค้นแจ๊คเป็นระยะเวลาอีก 10 ปี

After time had passed, Jack eventually let the devils change back into their original forms. He asked the devils to promise not to take vengeance on him within 1 year. However, next year Jack tried to trick the devils again by asking the devils to climb up a tree and pick some fruits. Then he trapped the devil with the cross so the devil couldn’t climb down. He asked the devils to promise not to bother Jack for 10 more years as an exchange if they wanted to climb down the tree.

Jack died not long after that. In an afterlife, Jack didn’t deserve to go to heaven since God saw his sinful behaviors when he was still alive. When Jack was a human being, he didn’t perform any good deeds but always played on others. As a result, Jack’s soul was sent to hell where he met the devils once again. Being upset after Jack played on them so many times, his soul was not welcomed in hell either.

The devils sent Jack off place in to a dark, quiet place on earth where he could find only the burning coal to light the way and he roamed alone since then. There were turnips carved in spooky demonic faces covering the path where he passed by. On Halloween Day or Ghost Festival, a figure of Jack would show up in front of people. His presence usually frightened and was hated by the locals. So, the Irish locals named him “Jack of the Lantern” or “Jack O’Lantern” in short and this name has been used until now.

As turnips become rare to find nowadays, the American have initiated the idea to replace turnips with pumpkins carved with spooky faces.
