To please the hungry wandering spirits, ritualistic food offerings include duck, chicken, fish, streaky pork and squids as the main dishes. Some traditional desserts should also be prepared such as fluffy rice flour cakes, Chinese rice cakes and sweet stuffed dough pyramids. As for the auspicious fruits, make sure you prepare oranges, bananas, apples, grapes and Chinese pears. What shouldn’t be missing are tea, liquors and joss papers.

Three sets of food offerings must be prepared for the Hungry Ghost Festival.

1. ของไหว้สำหรับเจ้าที่

นิยมไหว้ในเวลาเช้า ของคาวที่นิยมก็จะเป็น หมู เห็ด เป็ด ไก่ ซาลาเปา เกี๊ยว หมั่นโถว ขนมที่ใช้ไหว้จะเป็น ขนมถ้วยฟู ขนมเทียน ขนมเข่ง ที่มีจุดแดงๆ บนขนม เพราะมีความเชื่อว่าช่วยเสริมความเป็นสิริมงคลนั่นเอง แล้วก็มีผลไม้ น้ำชา เหล้าจีน และกระดาษเงินกระดาษทอง

In the morning, the offering is made to Chinese deities. The main dishes include duck, chicken, pork, steamed dumplings and steamed buns (both with and without filling). The desserts consist of fluffy rice flour cakes, sweet stuffed dough pyramids and Chinese rice cakes with a small red spot as the symbol of good fortune. Fruits, tea, Chinese liquors and the joss papers are also offered.

2. ของไหว้สำหรับบรรพบุรุษ

คล้ายๆ กับของไหว้เจ้าที่ แต่ที่เพิ่มเติมคือ อาหารคาวหวานที่บรรพบุรุษชื่นชอบ โดยส่วนมากจะต้องมีน้ำแกง หรือขนมที่เป็นน้ำใสๆ แล้วก็ข้าวสวยร้อนๆ และชุดน้ำชา ที่ต้องจัดเตรียมให้ครบตามจำนวนของบรรพบุรุษ และที่ขาดไม่ได้ก็คือ ผลไม้ ขนมเข่ง ขนมเทียน และกระดาษเงินกระดาษทองด้วยค่ะ

Similar to the offerings made to the deities, the offerings for the ancestors include savory and sweet dishes that they liked. Mostly you should include soup, dessert soup, rice and tea set according to the number of the ancestors. Also, some fruits, Chinese rice cakes, sweet stuffed dough pyramids and joss papers are also accompanied.

3. ของไหว้สำหรับวิญญานเร่ร่อน

หรือที่คนจีนถือว่าเป็นการไหว้พี่น้อง ซึ่งแสดงถึงการให้เกียรติกันของชาวจีน โดยนิยมไหว้นอกบ้าน ด้วยผลไม้ ขนม เส้นหมี่ ข้าวสวย กระดาษเงินกระดาษทองค่ะ

The offerings made to the orphaned souls are regarded as worshipping Chinese brothers and sisters to show respect. The ritual usually takes place in front of the house and the offerings consist of fruits, dessert, white noodles, steamed rice and joss papers.
