Of course everything on the offering table has a meaning. The question is whether a new chinese generation like you know the meanings of all the offerings. Today we would like to update you on a belief in the meanings of different meats used for the feast offering.

ไก่ต้ม (Boiled Chicken)

อย่างแรกที่ขาดไม่ได้จริงๆเลยก็คือไก่ต้ม ความหมายของ ไก่ แสดงถึงการเจริญก้าวหน้าในหน้าที่การงาน ความขยันขันแข็ง หงอนไก่ เปรียบเสมือนหมวกของ ขุนนาง สังเกตว่าเวลานำมาไหว้จะต้องเป็นไก่ที่ครบทุกส่วนนะคะ คือหัว ปีก ตัวขา รวมถึง เครื่องใน หัวใจกึ๋น ตับ แสดงถึงความอุดมสมบูรณ์นั่นเองค่ะ

The first and formost meat for the Chinese New Year is certainly boiled chicken. The meanings of chicken are career progression and diligence. The chicken’s comb represents the noble’s hat. Therefore, it has to be a whole chicken with head, legs including internal organs which signify abundance.

เป็ด (Duck)

เป็ด สื่อถึงความบริสุทธิ์ ความสะอาด และความมั่งคั่ง เก่งรอบด้าน เหมือนเป็ดที่ว่ายน้ำได้ และยังบินได้ อยู่บนบกก็ได้ โดยการนำมาไหว้นั้นก็ต้องนำมาทั้งตัว ครบทุกส่วนเช่นเดียวกับไก่ค่ะ

Duck conveys the meanings of purity, cleanness and prosperity. It also symbolises capability in all facets just like duck that can swim, fly and live on land. Like the chicken, it has to be one whole duck.

หมู ปลา และปลาหมึก (Pork, Fish and Squid)

แสดงถึงความมั่งคั่งอุดมสมบูรณ์เหลือกินเหลือใช้นั่นเอง โดยต้องเป็นหมูที่ติดมัน ปลาที่ไม่ขอดเกล็ด ไม่ควักไส้ทิ้ง และปลาหมึกตัวโตๆค่ะ

These types of meat represent prosperity and abundance. Pork needs to be lean and fish has to be whole, unscaled and ungutted. As for squid, make sure you pick a large size.

กุ้งล็อบสเตอร์ (American Lobster)

ส่วนเนื้อสัตว์ที่ไม่นิยมนำมาไหวนั้นก็คือ กุ้ง เพราะในภาษาจีนออกเสียงว่า “แฮ้” ซึ่ง ไปพ้องกับเสียงที่ให้ความหมายว่าอิดโรยนั่นเองซึ่งไม่เป็นมงคลค่ะ (บางตำราบอกว่ากุ้งลวกสามารถนำมาไหว้ได้ค่ะ เพราะกุ้งที่ลวกแล้วจะมีสีแดง แสดงถึงความเฮงๆนั่นเองค่ะ สำหรับแอดมินต้องกุ้งตัวโตๆอย่างล็อบสเตอร์เท่านั้นค่ะ)

The unpopular meat for this festival is prawn due to its chinese pronunciation “hae” which sounds homophonically similar to an unauspicious word meaning “exhausted.” However, some source says that boiled prawn is acceptable because of its red colour meaning good fortune.
